Llew O’Brien delivers $3 million for Cherbourg to Murgon footpath

The Liberal Nationals Government has today announced up to $3 million for a footpath connecting the communities of Cherbourg to Murgon for pedestrians and cyclists.

Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien, said the footpath had been a long time priority for the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council.

“This is an important project that will not only add a missing piece of infrastructure in the local region but will support local jobs through the construction phase.

“We have listened to what the community want, and this project will deliver better infrastructure, more opportunities for local businesses and jobs for locals through this new investment in the region.

“Once constructed, the footpath will provide a safe alternative route between Cherbourg and Murgon for pedestrians who are currently forced to use the verge of the road,” Mr O’Brien said today.

“Not only will this project create local jobs, but it will also give young people in the area the skills and experience needed to help prepare them for their lives ahead.”

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion said that the Liberal Nationals Government had a strong record of investing in local priorities in the Wide Bay region.

“Llew O’Brien is a champion for Cherbourg and all communities in his electorate and has secured this funding that will deliver more investment and more jobs for the residents of Wide Bay.

“The Liberal Nationals Indigenous Advancement Strategy invests in local projects that deliver for local communities and has a strong focus on supporting adults into work, growing Indigenous businesses and creating safer communities,” Minister Scullion.

The Australian Government has approved up to $3 million towards this project from the Indigenous Advancement Strategy and will work with the with the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council on final costs.
