Support small business and shop local this Christmas

Shhh, don’t tell Santa – Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien is backing small Wide Bay businesses this Christmas, and he encourages you to do the same by shopping local.

“Santa’s elves do great work in the North Pole, but we want those jobs here in Wide Bay, and that’s why we need to support our local businesses,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year for our Wide Bay small businesses – it’s when they work their hardest and employ more staff to keep up with the Christmas rush.

“That is why it is so important that we support them by buying locally, and ensuring they can thrive into the New Year and beyond.”

Mr O’Brien said small business was the engine room of the Wide Bay economy, and it was particularly important at this busy time of year.

“Many small businesses put on more staff around Christmas, including casual employees and young people looking for work, which is a vital injection of cash to our economy,” Mr O’Brien said.

“It can mean someone who has been previously unemployed or getting their first job now has a foot in the door to a new career, and the flow-on effects from the money it generates can make a significant impact.

“Wide Bay shops are packed with special and uniquely local gifts, with an absolute abundance of choice so you are sure to find something to suit every member of the family.”

Mr O’Brien has also backed the Minister for Small Business Michael McCormack’s call to Australians this Christmas – buy local and shop local.

“By backing small business this holiday season you are supporting the 5.6 million hard-working Australians which they employ – make this Christmas merry and shop local,” Mr McCormack said.
