Grants honour Wide Bay’s military heroes

Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien today announced three Wide Bay veterans organisations will share in more than $10,000 to honour Australia’s military heroes.

Mr O’Brien said the funding was made available through the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service program which supports projects that honour Australia’s armed forces and preserve military history.

The Mary Valley RSL Sub-Branch will receive $3,235 to restore the Mary Valley First World War honour boards and update the Imbil Memorial Cross to include the recognition of First World War service personnel.

Maryborough Military Aviation Museum Association will receive $3,900 to commission an honour board at the Maryborough military Aviation Museum to commemorate Second World War Royal Australian Air Force personnel.

Tin Can Bay RSL Sub-Branch will receive $3,300 to install plaques dedicated to the Army, Navy and Air Force at Memorial Hall in Tin Can Bay.

“These grants ensure the names of our fallen heroes will not be forgotten, and ensure younger generations can learn about the role Wide Bay’s men and women have played in our Anzac history,” Mr O’Brien said.

“As proud Australians, we must keep alive the Anzac spirit and ensure future generations are taught about our military history so that they understand the value of our freedom, and the price we have paid to maintain it.”

Mr O’Brien encouraged any local community organisations interested in applying for funding under the Saluting Their Service grants program to contact the Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Commemorative Grants team on 1800 026 185 or email [email protected]

The Saluting Their Service Community Commemorative Grants program provides up to $4,000 for an individual project. It is a rolling grants program, so applications are accepted at any time.
