Spelling out an opportunity for students in Wide Bay

February 27, 2020

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien is encouraging students in schools throughout Wide Bay to test their spelling skills by taking part in the inaugural Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee.

The Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee is a nationwide competition for students in years 3 to 8 that promotes reading and literacy.

“The Liberal and Nationals Government believes literacy and numeracy skills should be the cornerstone of every student’s education, Mr O’Brien said

“The Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee is a great initiative because it will help improve spelling, and that helps improve reading, which helps to improve learning.

“We want to encourage younger Australians to be avid readers so they become curious, creative and informed citizens.

“I visit schools throughout Wide Bay regularly and I understand the importance of strong literacy skills. I’m always impressed by the interest the students demonstrate in their learning and I hope all students take up this exciting opportunity which provides them with an exciting pathway to improve their literacy skills.”

The school round of the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee will be held from March 16 to 26. The online competition will be conducted in classrooms with three reading levels for years 3-4 (green category), years 5-6 (orange category) and years 7-8 (red category). Entrants are required to answer 30 spelling words per round.

Registrations are open now for the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee and will close on March 15. For more information or to register visit https://www.kidsnews.com.au/spelling-bee
