COMMITMENT TO UPGRADE COOROY BADMINTON CLUB
An elected Liberal and National Government will provide support for local families to engage in affordable and healthy recreational activities by delivering an upgrade to the Cooroy Badminton Club.
Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien has secured a $100,000 commitment to ensure that the Cooroy community has access to high quality sporting facilities.
“When the Badminton Club was built in the 1970’s membership numbers were quite low, but participation rates have grown considerably over the years and with approximately 135 members, the facility needs an upgrade to improve safety for players and spectators,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The $100,000 upgrade will enable the club to build a mezzanine viewing platform and staircase over the existing kitchen and bathroom facilities, to allow separation between players and spectators and create a safer space for all venue users.”
This commitment builds on Mr O’Brien’s previous support for the club which includes $20,000 for upgrades to club’s change rooms and kitchen.
“The club been working towards the upgrade for some time now, and we are excited to have the opportunity to deliver the project. It will make it easier and safer for the Cooroy community, the pickleball players, and the local schools who hire our courts, and open up new opportunities for other groups to use the facility,” Kris Blurton from Cooroy Badminton said.
Federal Member for Petrie, Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Financial Services Luke Howarth visited Cooroy Badminton today with Mr O’Brien to discuss the positive impacts the project will have on the local community.
“The badminton club at Cooroy is a welcoming and multi-cultural place, and I am impressed with their strong social conscience and how they support participation by local children whose families are struggling to afford the fees to enrol their kids in other sports,” Mr Howarth said.
