Coalition Government’s support for NAIDOC celebrations in Wide Bay
The Coalition Government’s support for the celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture has continued through funding for NAIDOC Week celebrations in the Wide Bay electorate with a variety of events, including sporting events, cultural showcases and school activities.
NAIDOC Week will be held from 8 – 15 July, with the theme Because of her, we can!, which celebrates the invaluable and continuing contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
Federal Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien, today announced that seven organisations across the electorate would benefit from the Australian Government’s 2018 NAIDOC Week grants round.
“The National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week is an annual celebration of the histories, rich cultures, outstanding achievements and ongoing contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” Mr O’Brien said.
“I’m pleased to support a range of community organisations to promote and celebrate NAIDOC Week, covering a wide range of events from the Sunbury State School in Maryborough providing an historical experience through music, dance and storytelling to a large, whole of community festival hosted by the Cherbourg Historical Precinct Group.
“I encourage everyone to attend a local event to learn more about the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the oldest continuing culture in the world.
“The Coalition has been able to assist these wonderful local initiatives through our strong economic plan for Australia and our responsible management of the budget,” Mr O’Brien said.
