Australian Government reaffirms funding for the Noosa-Cooloola road upgrade

• The Australian Government will provide $2 million towards upgrading the Noosa-Cooloola coastal link road
• When completed the project will link Noosa to the Cooloola, Sunshine and Fraser coasts
• The paved road will open the area to more visitors to the region

The Australian Government today reaffirmed its election commitment to help upgrade the Noosa to Cooloola Coast road link.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the Australian Government would provide $2 million towards sealing the road from Noosa to Tin Can Bay.

“The upgraded road will generate more tourism opportunities by making the Sunshine, Cooloola and Fraser coasts more accessible via a sealed coastal road alternative to the Bruce Highway,” Mr Chester said.

“Planning for a sealed coastal link between Noosa and Tin Can Bay has been underway since 1985 with the Noosa and Gympie regional councils taking responsibility for undertaking the significant works required to keep the unsealed road open.

“The Australian Government’s $2 million will now be used to seal the road with the councils expected to play a lead role in undertaking the works.”

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said connecting many of the region’s coastal tourism attractions would provide a real boost to local communities. 

“The new road will allow all road users to travel between Maryborough, Tin Can Bay, Cooloola Cove, Rainbow Beach, Kin Kin and Noosa without having to travel on the Bruce Highway,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This is a road to jobs and growth.  Opening up this beautiful region to more tourists and locals will provide more opportunities for regional businesses, agriculture and tourism.”

“I have been speaking with the Gympie and Noosa Councils and representatives from the State Government about the importance of this project and I hope they will maintain their interest in the project and contribute to its completion.

“As Chair of the Queensland Black Sport Consultative Committee, and as a former traffic accident investigator, I understand the benefits that safer roads deliver.  I am committed to securing more funding to build better roads in Wide Bay.”
