$50,000 grant to help Pomona bowlers stay sun-safe

Pomona bowlers will be protected from the sun’s harsh rays with a $50,000 grant to replace the Pomona Bowls Club’s shade cover, Federal
Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien and Minister for Sport Senator Bridget McKenzie announced today.

“An active outdoor lifestyle is one of the best features of Wide Bay, and it’s important to enjoy it while remaining sun-safe,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This funding will ensure more people in Pomona are able to enjoy the health and social benefits associated with sports like bowling, without risking sunburn, and the benefits will be felt throughout the whole community.”

The grant was provided as part of the Liberal Nationals Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Program and will allow the Club to replace its existing shade cloth with full 90 percent shade-factor, commercial grade shade cloth, and install new drive pulleys, stainless steel drive wires and new design side and front carriers.

“This investment in sporting infrastructure and facilities will provide a real encouragement for people to get active, as it is a key priority of our government to encourage  promote the social and health benefits of physical activity and sport,” Mr O’Brien said.
 
“I’m pleased that because of the Liberal National government’s responsible economic management and delivery of a budget surplus, we are in the position to support the Pomona Bowls Club and increase the investment in sporting facilities across Australia.”

Minister for Sport Senator Bridget McKenzie said the Liberal Nationals Government understood the value of local sporting facilities.
 
“Our success and prowess as a sporting nation begins with grassroots sports, which is why we have focused our investment on local grassroots sporting facilities such as Pomona Bowls Club,” Minister McKenzie said.
 
“As outlined in the National Sports Plan, Sport 2030, grassroots sports help drive increased participation and promote social, health and community benefits of physical activity and sport – a key priority for our government.”
