$24,620 for six Men’s Sheds in Wide Bay

Six Men’s Sheds in Wide Bay will receive a share in $24,620 for improvements and community activities, Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien announced today.

“Men’s Sheds across Wide Bay are providing a valuable community service, and I’m pleased to be able to support their work with this funding for the Maryborough, Bauple, Tin Can Bay, Pomona, and Murgon sheds,” Mr O’Brien said.

• Bauple Community Shed will receive 4,500 for improvements including solar batteries.
• Maryborough Men’s Shed will receive $2,620 to run first aid, CPR, Operational Health and White Card courses; and to purchase a defibrillator.
• Men’s Shed Pomona will receive $3,500 for safety signage, a First Aid refresher course, and safety equipment including fire extinguishers.
• Murgon Men’s Shed Incorporated will receive $7,500 for the installation of a8 Kw solar system.  
• Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed will receive $6,500 for non-slip vinyl to recreation area, kitchen, and first aid room.

The funding was awarded under round 18 of the Liberal National Government’s National Shed Development Programme.
 
“As well as bringing men together to work on meaningful projects, one of the great successes of Men’s Sheds is that they provide a forum for men to talk about health issues and encourage men to look after themselves,” Mr O’Brien said.
 
“They provide a friendly space to talk about the type of issues that a lot of men might not be comfortable talking about, like mental health and loneliness, and they also provide the opportunity for mentors for those facing uncertainty in life and who are looking to acquire new skills.
 
“This funding round helps the Maryborough, Bauple, Tin Can Bay, Pomona, and Murgon sheds provide that significant support to local men who need a bit of space and some friendly, easy-going company.”
 
“Our Government recognises these benefits and is investing a total of $5.1 million over three years to the national men’s sheds movement to ensure we do what we can to ensure they get the assistance men need and deserve.”
 
Heath Minister Greg Hunt said feeling part of a social group is important to our emotional and mental health.
 
“Every day Men’s Sheds across Australia and in the Wide bay provide men with an opportunity for companionship and support within their community,” Minister Hunt said.

The Men’s Shed grants programme provides funding for health improvement activities, the purchase of tools and equipment, community projects and training, and for building maintenance and development.
