2018 ANZAC DAY SCHOOLS’ AWARDS COMPETITION WINNER
Federal Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien MP, is pleased to announce that the Maryborough Special School has won the Best Local History Research award in this year’s Anzac Day Schools’ Awards for their project commemorating the service and sacrifice of our veterans over the past century

“I would like to congratulate Ms Sue Omar, Principal of the Maryborough Special School, and the team led by Ms Rose Wright, for their exceptional entry into the Anzac Day Schools’ competition,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The submission from students from the Maryborough Special School involved a variety of activities created by the students which provided a portrayal of how the region was involved in the Anzac story.  The project was complemented by the students telling stories of soldiers from the region.

“The Anzac Day Schools’ Awards is a fantastic initiative to encourage participating students to gain a strong understanding of the significance of Anzac Day and the importance of commemoration.

“Anzac Day commemorations also help our younger Australians gain a deeper appreciation of our wartime history, and the role that war has played in shaping our nation. I encourage all young Australians to learn the Anzac story and pass it onto to future generations,” Mr O’Brien said.

Entries for the Anzac Day Schools’ Awards are open to all Australian primary and secondary schools, with each school eligible to submit one entry. Schools this year submitted a range of entries, including a mix of comprehensive research, dance, art, poetry and reflective writing.
