PLANTING TREES FOR THE QUEEN’S JUBILEE IN MURGON

December 12, 2022

The Murgon community will have a perpetual memorial to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, with today’s ceremonial dedication of the sixteen native trees planted in Queen Elizabeth Park, funded by the Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee Program.

In 2022, the former Coalition Government supported a range of national and community events to commemorate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, and to honour her life’s achievements.

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said today “The Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee Program honoured Her Majesty’s seventy years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth by providing funding to eligible organisations for community based tree planting and commemorative events.”

“The South Burnett Council, in partnership with sixteen local community groups, received funding to install a commemorative plaque and plant an avenue of purple and white trees that will provide a beautiful and fitting memorial to our late Queen.”

The sixteen trees were planted in Queen Elizabeth this week, and today’s event includes a formal opening ceremony and dedication of a tree to each of the sixteen community groups who play such an important role in the local community.

“Planting regionally-appropriate species that enhance the tree canopy will also leave a legacy of its own—in the form of trees flourishing across the nation for Australians to enjoy into the future,” Mr O’Brien said.

Murgon Business and Development Association President Leo Geraghty OAM congratulated Mr O’Brien, the South Burnett Council, and the sixteen local community groups on creating a lovely and welcoming entrance statement to Murgon.

“This project could potentially be the first stage of a beautification of the town, with the installation of benches and other elements that further enhance this community space,” Mr Geraghty said.

The Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee Program complements other initiatives taking place across the Commonwealth to mark the Queen’s Jubilee.

Her Majesty reached the Platinum Jubilee milestone in June 2022 and passed away on 8 September 2022.
