Grants to help Wide Bay commemorate Victory in the Pacific Day

January 16, 2020

Wide Bay community groups can apply for grants of up to $10,000 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day, Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien announced today.

Mr O’Brien said the Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants program was recently expanded to place a focus on the Second World War and later wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

The guidelines now allow for a diverse range of projects to be funded under the STS Commemorative Grants program, including documentaries, digital projects, and podcasts as well as community memorials and preservation of wartime memorabilia.

“We must never forget that nearly one million Australians served in the Second World War, while more than 39,000 died and another 30,000 became prisoners of war,” Mr O’Brien said.

“It is important that future generations of Australians remember the sacrifices made, and learn about the critical role of our service personnel.

“Victory in the Pacific Day marked the end of the Second World War, so it is an important date to acknowledge, and these grants will help groups in the Wide Bay community to commemorate their local servicemen and women.

“I encourage Wide Bay groups to apply for a project that commemorates and honours our local Second World War history.”

Applications for the Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants program are now open on the Community Grants Hub (https://www.communitygrants.gov.au/) and close on Tuesday, 31 March 2020.

WELCOME TO WIDE BAY

In the spirit of Australia, I acknowledge all citizens who contribute to making our nation the greatest on earth.

I acknowledge our defence force personnel, past, present, and emerging, for their service to our nation, and particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of Australia.

I also acknowledge the Australian taxpayers who, through their hard work, pay for the infrastructure, health, education, and emergency services that keep our proud nation healthy, safe, and prosperous.
