$3.5 million for commemorations recognising Australian veterans

February 11, 2022

Wide Bay Ex-service and community organisations are encouraged to apply for a share in $3.5 million for commemorative projects through the latest round of the Saluting Their Service grants program.

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Llew O’Brien said applications are now open for up to $10,000 are available for smaller, community-based projects and activities, while Major Grants of up to $150,000 can be awarded to projects that are significant from a national, state, territory or regional perspective.

“These grants can be used to support a range of projects that will help preserve Wide Bay’s wartime history and reflect on our rich military history, from new memorials and refurbishments to exhibitions and publications,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Wide Bay is home to some remarkable memorials that are among the best in Australia, and this funding is an opportunity to build new ways of commemorating the sacrifices made by those who have served in defence of our nation, from all communities in our region.

“We must ensure Wide Bay’s local history of service is never forgotten, and I will work with local ex-service organisations and community groups to see what projects might be able to be funded through this important program.”

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee said the Australian Government had committed an extra $10 million to the ongoing program, offering more support for more organisations.

“The Saluting Their Service program has seen hundreds of worthy projects across Australia funded in recent years, to help local communities pay tribute to Australians who have served during wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations,” Minister Gee said.

“The program ensures Australia’s wartime history is preserved and the sacrifice of those who have served is remembered.”

Assessment of applications is divided into three batches: applications submitted between 9 February and 9 June 2022; between 10 June and 11 October 2022; and between 12 October 2022 and 7 February 2023.

This allows organisations to submit multiple applications throughout the year.

I acknowledge our defence force personnel, past, present, and emerging, for their service to our nation, and particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of Australia.

I also acknowledge the Australian taxpayers who, through their hard work, pay for the infrastructure, health, education, and emergency services that keep our proud nation healthy, safe, and prosperous.
